Tongue Piercing
Tongue piercing has become popular in mainstream culture. Tongues can be pierced either horizontally or vertically with a long barbell, through the part of the tongue where there are no nerves or soft tissue. This temporary barbell is extra long to allow room for swelling.
In the first 3 days following the piercing, the tongue will usually swell to twice its normal size and you will likely experience difficulties speaking, chewing and swallowing. Swelling should begin to decrease after 3 to 5 days. A tongue piercing generally takes between 5 and 10 days to heal. Once the initial swelling has subsided, the long barbell can be replaced with a smaller barbell.
During the swelling and healing process follow this advice:
Apply ice and drink ice cold water to minimize swelling.
Refrain from eating, drinking and smoking during the first 3 hours.
Avoid drinking alcohol, eating spicy or sweet foods.
Don't perform unprotected oral sex.
Don't smoke or reduce smoking to a minimum.
Never use chewed tobacco - even once healing is complete.
Rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash after eating, drinking, and smoking.
Use only bottled water to rinse mouthwash.
