Celtic crosses symbolize a bridge to another world of higher energy and knowledge. The first Celtic cross had four equal points representing the four directions, and the four elements enclosed by a circle representing the sun. Early Celtic crosses were used to mark holy spots in pre-Christian times.
Most Celtic crosses use knots or knotwork in their design. Some of the more common Celtic cross designs include the following:
Simple Knotwork Cross - represents the unity of life and death or of belief of heaven and earth.
Triple Knot Cross - represents the interlocked levels of our physical, mental and spiritual being.
Trinity Knot Cross - represents the interlocking stages of birth, death and rebirth.
Celtic crosses are generally worn as pendants on necklaces but are also seen as earrings.
