An American Gemological Laboratories (AGL) Diamond Quality Document is accepted and respected by the jewelry industry. The AGL uses a diamond grading system that ranks cut, color, and clarity on a 0 to 10 scale, with zero being the most rare and 10 being the least desirable.
The elements of an AGL Diamond Quality Document include:
Shape and style – Diamond shape and style of cut are noted.
Measurement – Millimeter measurements and proportions of the diamond.
Cut grade – Assigns cut grades of Ideal, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. A diamond that meets an "Ideal" grade of perfect proportions, polish, and symmetry is known through the diamond industry as a "000" grade.
Color grade – A grade of color from 0 to 10 is assigned in increments of half-points.
Clarity grade – A grade of clarity from 0 to 10 is assigned. The Comments section may contain remarks about the finish.
Clarity plot – A map of the size, type and position of inclusions as viewed under a microscope.
Carat weight – Diamond carat weight is measured to the 3rd decimal place.
Comments – Extra details for any of the above items are listed, as well as a fluorescence rating, which is denoted as being inert, faint, medium, strong, or very strong.
Diamond profile – A diagram showing the depth and table percentages of the diamond.
