A Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Diamond Grading Report presents a report of the characteristics of a diamond that is signed by the most respected experts in the industry.
The GIA set the standard for diamond grading and gemological identification, and their grading system serves the international gemstone and jewelry industry.
The elements of GIA Diamond Dossiere include:
Laser inscription – Each diamond with a GIA Diamond Dossier is laser-inscribed with the report number.
Shape and cutting style – Description of the diamond shape and cutting style.
Measurement – Diamond overall measurements and dimensions.
Weight – Weight of the diamond to the nearest hundredth of a carat.
Depth – Depth for round diamonds or width for fancy-shaped diamonds relative to the diameter.
Table – Table facet (for round diamonds) or width for fancy-shaped diamonds relative to the diameter.
Girdle – Range of the girdle thickness.
Culet – Appearance of the culet (bottom) facet.
Finish – Grades of polish and symmetry.
Clarity grade – Clarity grade determined under 10X power magnification.
Clarity plot – A map of the size, type and position of inclusions as viewed under a microscope.
Color grade – Grade of color.
Fluorescence – Amount of fluorescence when diamond is viewed under UV light.
Comments – Additional diamond characteristics not mentioned elsewhere in the report.
The GIA does not assign a grade to the diamond cut. Instead, the GIA lists the diamond's dimensions instead.
