Synthetic emeralds are emeralds that are produced in a laboratory. Unlike simulated emeralds, which look like emeralds but differ from natural emeralds physically and chemically, synthetic emeralds duplicate natural emeralds entirely.
Good quality synthetic emeralds have been around since the 1940s. While emeralds were popular because of their very low price, they didn't really look like natural emeralds. All natural emeralds contain inclusions, which are internal blemishes that are as unique to each emerald as a fingerprint. The early synthetic diamonds looked too good to be true as they did not contin such inclusions.
Today however, new sophisticated manufacturing processes, like the hydrothermal and flux methods, produce synthetic emeralds that are very difficult to tell about from natural emeralds without the use of specialized equipment and testing.
Some name for synthetic emeralds include the following:
- Biron Emerald
- Chatham Emerald
- Gilson Emerald
- Kimberly Emerald
- Lennix Emerald
- Linde Emerald
- Regency Emerald
- Zerfass Emerald
