Garnet at Diamonds Gemstones Jewelry
Garnet

Garnet is actually a family of gemstones encompassing a wide range of colors, although the classic jeweler's garnet, known as pyrope garnet, has a deep red color.

Other garnet species include dark red Almandine, red-orange Spessartine, yellow-green Grossular, brown-green Andradite, green Uvaroite, and green Dematoid garnet. All these other garnets have found their way onto the gem market.

Even rarer than alexandrite, demantoid garnet is a brilliant green gem that has fire like a diamond. Because the original Russian demantoid mine produces only a small amount of the gem, and other mines contain a lower grade yellow-green gem, fine demantoid garnet is almost never found in sizes above 2 carats.

Occasionally a piece of demantoid garnet will include an asbestos inclusion that looks like the tail of a horse. These “horse-tail” demantoid garnets are particularly valued, and are one example where inclusions increase rather than decrease the quality of a gemstone.

Garnet is the anniversary gemstone for the 2nd and 6th years of marriage.
