Tanzanite is a version of the mineral zoisite and may range in color from green to blue to dark violet. Tanzanite comes only from Tanzania, is fairly brittle and must be handled with extreme care. As such, it is typically safer for use in earrings and pendants than in rings.

Nearly all tanzanite is heat-treated to improve the desirable blue and violet colors and to reduce undesirable yellows and the browns.
