Jewelry Prong Setting
The prong setting, or claw setting, is the most common type of setting for diamond rings - espcially for women's diamond solitaire rings.
The diamond is fitted into a metal basket and secured with 3 up to 6 prongs. There also special prong styles such as Belcher, Fishtail, and Tiffany. Extra prongs add security for the diamond and can make the stone look slightly larger. Too many prongs however can overpower the diamond, making the ring look smaller.
The prongs may be rounded, elongated, flat, pointed or V-shaped. For heart-shape, pear-shaped, or marquise diamonds, V-shaped prongs should be used to hold the points as this style affords the best protection. For emerald cut diamonds, flat prongs are recommended.
