Platinum was first discovered in ancient Egypt. In the late 1800s platinum was very popular throughout Europe and Russia. Kings, Queens, Tsars and Maharajas all wore platinum. Spain's King Charles IV commissioned a platinum room, while others wore gowns woven with platinum thread. And some of the world's most famous diamonds, including the Star of Africa diamond, the Hope diamond and the Koh-I-Noor diamond all were mounted in platinum settings.
Early in the 1900s, platinum was popular in America. However, at the outset of World War II, the US government declared platinum a strategic metal, disallowing its use for jewelry. Americans made do with white gold and by the end of the war, platinum had been all but forgotten for jewelry.
Today, platinum has regained its enormous popularity. Since the early 1990s, platinum remains the preferred precious metal among celebrities, and is considered a a symbol of beauty, timelessness, and elegance.
