Never clean rubies in an ultrasonic cleaner or with soap. Some rubies, especially those found in antique jewelry, are filled with an epoxy resin to hide flaws. Ultrasonic cleaning will fillers, thereby exposing perhaps a more flawed ruby.

Ionic cleaners are safe to use for rubies and other jewelry.
