The Bismarck sapphire, weighing 98.6 carats, is a faceted sapphire from Sri Lanka donated by the Countess Mona Bismarck.
Logan Sapphire
The Logan sapphire weighs 423 carats and is set with 20 diamonds. The sapphire has a rich blue color. It was donated by Mrs. John A. Logan and is considered to one of the finest large sapphires in existence.
Star of Artaban Sapphire
The Star of Artaban sapphire is a blue six-rayed star sapphire weighing 316 carats from Sri Lanka.
Star of Asia Sapphire
The Star of Asia sapphire weighs in at 330 carats, is a rich blue-violet color, and is one of the finest star sapphires in existence.
Star of Bombay Sapphire
The Star of Bombay sapphire was donated to the Smithsonian by the famous movie actress Mary Pickford. It weighs 182 carats and is a beautiful blue-violet star sapphire.
Star of India Sapphire
Star of India sapphire weighs a massive 563.35 carats. This star sapphire is from Sri Lanka and is grayish blue in color.
Midnight Star Sapphire
The Midnight Star sapphire is a deep violet sapphire from Ceylon and weights 116.75 carats.
Stuart Sapphire
The Stuart Sapphire belonged to Charles II where it passed on to his son, Charles Edward. This sapphire is now part of Queen Victoria’s State Crown just below the Black Prince’s Ruby. It was later replaced by the Lesser Star of Africa (Cullinan II) diamond and today is set in a similar position on the opposite side of the same crown.
St. Edward’s Sapphire
The St. Edward Sapphire is set in the same crown as the Stuart Sapphire. This sapphire has a history stretching back farther than even the Black Prince’s Ruby. According to tradition, the St. Edward’s Sapphire was originally set in the coronation ring of Edward the Confessor, who was crowned in 1042 AD.
Ruspoli’s Sapphire
Also known as the Wooden Spoon-Seller’s Sapphire and the Great Sapphire of Louis XIV. It is known for its distinctive lozenge shape and has only six facets. It is nearly without flaw containing only one small feather and crystal inclusion.
State Gem Corporation of Sri Lanka Sapphire
Probably the finest large star sapphire in existence is the 393 carat sapphire owned by the State Gem Corporation of Sri Lanka. It is an incredibly rich blue color and exhibits a beautiful star. In 1981, this sapphire went on display at the Festival of Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth Institute, Kensington, England, guarded by a 4.5-foot cobra sentry.
Catherine the Great Sapphire
The Catherine the Great Sapphire weighs in at a massive 337 carats. Of unknown origin, it was presented to Catherine II of Russia by an unidentified admirer. The sapphire remained part of the Romanoff jewel collection until sold by Nicholas II to finance a hospital train for the Russian army during World War I. It was later purchased by famous jeweler Harry Winston.
