Never clean sapphires in an ultrasonic cleaner or with soap. Some sapphires, especially those found in antique jewelry, are filled with an epoxy resin to hide flaws. Ultrasonic cleaning will fillers, thereby exposing perhaps a more flawed sapphire.

Ionic cleaners are safe to use for sapphires and other jewelry.
